Steamboat Springs, CO
Many people come to Steamboat Springs in the winter to ski. Affectionately known as Ski Town USA, the town swells with twice as many visitors as locals from November to May, all to enjoy world class skiing at what is one of the country's best ski resorts. With over 300 inches of average annual snowfall, Steamboat is a winter wonderland. The snow is champagne light, making for awesome powder conditions. The Steamboat Ski Area covers over 3,000 acres, offers a 3,668 foot vertical drop, 142 trails, an exciting snow park and is home to the country's longest superpipe.
But if you ever visit Steamboat in the summertime, your heart will truly be captivated and you will be compelled to return time and again. As far back as 14th Century, the Ute Indians visited Steamboat in the summertime to enjoy the plentiful wildlife and the hot springs. Boasting bright blue skies over 300 days each year, a night sky full of more stars than you ever imagined and ideal daytime conditions for whatever recreational interests you wish to entertain: fishing, hiking, biking and more.
Lush river valleys and majestic mountains surround Steamboat Springs. Lying against the western slope of the Continental Divide, the town is nearly surrounded by National Forests and Wilderness Areas. The Yampa River begins in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and runs through downtown Steamboat Springs, providing great summer recreational opportunities right in our own back yard! There are three large lakes in Routt County: Stagecoach Reservoir, Steamboat Lake and Pearl Lake. And we have three championship golf courses.
Named by fur trappers in the 1860's for a hot spring on the west side of town that emitted the chugging sound of a steamboat as it bubbled up from the ground, there are over 150 mineral springs around Steamboat. Boasting the status of "hometown" for 69 winter Olympians, more than any other town in the US. The year-round population in all of Routt County is just under 20,000, with approximately half living within the City of Steamboat Springs. The elevation in downtown Steamboat Springs is 6,695' above sea level. The elevation at the top of Mt. Werner (the ski hill) is at 10,568'. There is a small airport in Steamboat Springs for private jets, but the Hayden airport provides commercial jet services to the Steamboat area and it is located just 20 miles west of Steamboat.
